Nearly a hundred years ago, my first paying job was in retail - a cashier at Turn-Style! Now I find myself being a cashier in a convenience store / fly-shop, facing shelves, stocking product and up-selling customers to go ahead and buy those 50% off boots!
The customers are amazing. Fly-fisher-people (yes, some are female) just want to work the river, catching and releasing fish. I will never understand the allure, nor the lures and flies used in the sport, but it is fun to watch so many other people doing what they love. Doesn't matter the weather or the water conditions (yesterday the Forest Service or some other government agency decided to let water out of the dam and it caused the Green River to become the Mud and Muck River, sending all the fish into hiding), they come in their waders, water-resistant jackets, hats, sunglasses, red-faced from wind burn, worn out strides.... just to grab a bite in the restaurant or a bag of chips from my side of the resort.
Which brings me to the definition of "resort". Let's just be kind and say my definition is different.. .but I am learning nearly everything I think is different than the "norm". And I am blessed to be able to wander around in a paid-for big diesel RV with a paid-for truck. No more details, but you can read between the lines. Say a little pray for all those hard working retail associates, and those who were once highly-paid mine workers, who find it difficult to get ahead.
On a lighter note.. here is a picture of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. I will take a hike soon in the area and post some spectacular pictures in the next few days... thanks for following along on this journey!
